OUR HISTORY

The Lincoln West Optimist Club has been a steadfast pillar in the Lincoln, Nebraska community since its charter in September 1969. Founded with the mission to bring optimism and positive change to the lives of youth, our club has a rich history of service, community engagement, and foresight that has shaped its enduring legacy.

The Founding Vision:

In the late 1960s, a group of forward-thinking individuals, inspired by the Optimist International vision, came together to form the Lincoln West Optimist Club. Their goal was clear: to create a positive and supportive community for the youth of Lincoln, fostering an environment where young minds could flourish and dreams could take flight.

Charter Member Dick Van Horn's Vision:

Among these founding members was Dick Van Horn, whose foresight and dedication played a pivotal role in shaping the early years of the club. Van Horn not only helped organize the Lincoln West Optimist Club but had the vision to pursue the idea of leasing a club site while Branched Oak Lake was still under construction. This foresight laid the groundwork for the club's long-term commitment to community service and youth development.

The Birth of the Lodge:

In 1995, the culmination of years of hard work and dedication resulted in the construction and dedication of a new lodge for the Lincoln West Optimist Club. This significant milestone was not only a testament to the club's growth but also a tribute to the vision of Dick Van Horn. The Lodge, named in his honor, stands as a symbol of the enduring legacy of one of our charter members.

A Legacy of Service:

Over the years, the Lincoln West Optimist Club has grown in both membership and impact. Currently boasting around 90 members, our club remains a vibrant force in the community, driven by the same optimism and dedication that fueled its inception over five decades ago.

Continuing the Tradition:

As we reflect on our history, we are reminded of the individuals who laid the foundation for our club and the countless lives we have touched. The Lincoln West Optimist Club remains committed to its founding principles, carrying the torch of optimism into the future and continuing to make a positive impact on the youth of Lincoln, Nebraska.
